Jour 1: Udaipur

ITALY/UDAIPUR (-/-/D)
Once a year we organize a horseback safari from Udaipur to the Camel Market and the Pushkar Fair, in this small town on the edge of the Thar Desert.
This is one of the highlights and certainly among the most spectacular moments, first of all for its breathtaking landscapes and secondly for the participation in the colorful Pushkar Fair, probably one of the liveliest festivals in India.
The safari route starts from the Aravalli Mountains, with their unique geographical features, and descends to the vast Thar Desert and the town of Pushkar. Considered a sacred city, Pushkar hosts once a year the largest Camel Market in India, which is also a religious festival and a craft fair.
Along the route there are few places of interest, but the landscape change is truly impressive.
After leaving behind the Aravalli Mountains, the riders enter the semi-desert surrounding the Thar Desert, where people struggle hard to make a living from poor soil. Camels replace horses and cows, and the rocky terrain of the hills gives way to the desert sand.
Some highlights along the way include the tribal culture of this region or the imposing Kharwa fortress, which our riders can visit. The local noble family has a great interest in horses and, if present, there is always an opportunity for a chat.
But the true climax of this safari is obviously the Pushkar Camel Fair, where about 25,000 animals are traded every year, including camels, horses, and cattle. It is also an important festival, so many people from the region go to Pushkar to enjoy the fair, participate in religious ceremonies, or shop for all kinds of goods.
The first departure dates are from Udaipur to Pushkar. The second group of dates refers to the safari from Pushkar to Udaipur (Return Safari from Pushkar). The time spent at the Pushkar Fair is the same on both safaris.

Pick-up from Maharana Pratap International Airport (UDR) and transfer to the hotel in Udaipur. Dinner, trip briefing and overnight at Hotel Boheda Palace.

Jour 2: Udaipur

UDAIPUR (B/L/D)
Breakfast and city tour: we will visit the City Palace with a guide and take a boat ride on Lake Pichola to visit the magical Jag Mandir Island Palace. In the afternoon transfer to the stables and first short horseback excursion. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Boheda Palace.

Jour 3: Udaipur

UDAIPUR (B/L/D)
After breakfast, horseback excursion through the Aravalli Mountains around Udaipur. Departure following small rivers through the hills, crossing tribal villages and isolated farms. Packed lunch by a small lake before returning to our farm. In the afternoon, a visit to a large temple dedicated to Durga, the goddess of war.
Return to the farm in the afternoon, where tea and refreshments await. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Boheda Palace.

Jour 4:

UDAIPUR/MANGALWAD LAKE (B/L/D)
Today the real safari begins at Badwei Lake (about 2 hours by car from Udaipur). The horses are already waiting for us on the shore. Meeting with your horse and departure for a ride through countryside dotted with palm trees, cultivated fields and small villages. With some luck, Nilgai antelopes may be spotted.
This area is richer than the rest of Rajasthan thanks to the fertility of the soil. The farmers’ houses have richly decorated entrances and even the ox carts are wood-carved. Long sandy trails invite trotting and galloping: the horses appreciate the soft terrain and gallop for kilometers.
Arrival in Mangalwad around 4:00 pm. Our safari camp is located near Mangalwad lake. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Jour 5:

MANGALWAD LAKE (B/L/D)
After breakfast, departure for a long ride to the large freshwater lake near Palod. The lake changes size with the seasons but is always spectacular. With some luck, water birds, flamingos or even Sarus cranes can be observed. The route winds through open plains and cultivated fields, crossing small villages and grasslands, habitat of Nilgai antelopes. Lunch at the lake in a scenic spot. In the afternoon, return via a wide circuit to the camp at Mangalwad.

Jour 6:

MANGALWAD LAKE (B/L/D)
Another day on horseback in the open countryside of Malwa. Crossing the Mangalwad dam following sandy trails among fields, villages and palm-studded prairies.
Packed lunch in the shade of trees, in a quiet place where even the horses can rest and graze.
In the afternoon, passing near a colorful temple dedicated to Durga. Arrival at the camp in the afternoon, where an aperitif with lake view awaits.

Jour 7: Pushkar

MANGALWAD LAKE/PUSHKAR (B/L/D)
After breakfast, departure for Pushkar. After an hour’s drive, reach Chittorgarh and its UNESCO Heritage site: the Chittorgarh Fort, one of the most imposing fortresses in Northern India, conquered only three times in its history before being abandoned in the 16th century. After the visit, continue to Pushkar, where you will stay in a comfortable safari camp with double tents equipped with private bathrooms.
If time permits, first visit to the Camel Fair. The evening features traditional Rajasthani dance and music. Dinner and overnight at the camp just outside Pushkar.

Jour 8: Pushkar

PUSHKAR (B/L/D)
Today explore the fair and the holy city of Pushkar on foot and by camel.
You can watch spectacular horse and camel shows in the Mela grounds or stroll through the fair area, where thousands of animals are for sale.
Observe the ongoing trade, just as it has happened for 500 years, and visit the sacred Pushkar Lake, where thousands of Hindu pilgrims bathe every year to purify themselves from sins. Dinner and overnight at the camp just outside Pushkar.

Jour 9:

PUSHKAR/JAIPUR/ITALY (B/-/-)
Breakfast and free transfer to Ajmer railway station (and take the fast train to Udaipur) or transfer (extra charge) to Jaipur Airport (JAI).

Note: the second week runs in the opposite direction to the first (Pushkar → Udaipur).
